Beats Per Millennium - Beasties, Snoop, others bring rap to stages of major festivals

Beasties, Snoop, others bring rap to stages of major festivals

The lineup for the 2009 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival was leaked via TV on the Radio’s Myspace page earlier this evening, a mere three hours before the festival was set to announce it. One year after the well documented Kanye West catastrophe, the festival once again included a hip hop act among its headliners, albeit the considerably more reliable Beastie Boys. The Beasties, playing the festival for the first time, join Bruce Springsteen, Nine Inch Nails, and Phish (set to noodle for a staggering six hours), on a lineup heavy on big ticket headliners.

The Beasties will be joined at the Manchester, TN festival by Snoop Dogg, who is sure to feel right at home with the traditional Bonnaroo recreational activities. Other hip hop(ish) names on the lineup include Erykah Badu (congrats by the way), Santogold, Raphael Saadiq, People Under the Stairs and The Knux. Bonnaroo takes place June 11-14.

Snoop is becoming a downright festival whore. Next month he will be among the headliners at Miami’s Langerado, known for being the first notable music festival of the year. Also on the bill will be Public Enemy, K’Naan and Murs. Non-rap headliners will be Death Cab for Cutie and Modest Mouse. Langerado is happening March 6-8. UPDATE: LANGERADO HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Public Enemy will also be playing Coachella in Indio, CA on the weekend of April 17-19, along with Lupe Fiasco, People Under the Stairs, The Bug, Atmosphere and Clipse (sweet.) Coachella will be headlined by Paul McCartney, The Killers, The Cure, and presumably at least one completely out of leftfield act that doesn’t play many shows (Californians keep your fingers crossed for Outkast.)

Finally, Girl Talk is playing all three of these festivals and will most likely be playing every other festival under the sun.
