Dyson to write a book on Illmatic!
Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, the renowned author of Holler If You Hear Me: Searching for Tupac Shakur, Know What I Mean: Reflections on Hip Hop, and a host of other excellent books, both on hip hop and other subjects, is currently writing a book on Illmatic, Nas’s classic debut album. Dyson revealed details of the book yesterday in an interview with AllHipHop.com:
“Every song on Illmatic will be analyzed, interpreted and then re-articulated in a kind of intellectual sense from his own base in hip hop and we’re trying to deal with that seriously.”
Dyson expressed particularly strong feelings for “One Love,” which he claims holds special importance to him since his brother, Everett, is currently serving a life sentence for a crime he says he did not commit.
Amazon has Dyson’s Illmatic slated for a January 2009 publication on Basic Civitas Books.

Last year one of my students wrote a paper that tried to do the same thing. It was one of my favorite papers from the whole class. I’ll definitely have to pick up Dyson’s book.
