Beats Per Millennium - Nikki Giovanni edits the cutest rap book ever

Nikki Giovanni edits the cutest rap book ever

Poet Nikki Giovanni (you know…the one on the page before Kanye’s mommy) recently put out a children’s book that is taking the world by storm. Or at least selling very well. Hip Hop Speaks to Children: A Celebration of Poetry With a Beat has climbed to number three among picture books on the New York Times children’s best-seller list.

The book features lyrics by many popular rap artists, including Kanye West (duh), Mos Def, and A Tribe Called Quest. The rap lyrics are set alongside other great works of African American literature, such as Langston Hughes’ “Dream Variations” and Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech. On the accompanying CD (yeah, this book is a great deal!) King’s speech is also given a hip hop interpretation by Giovanni and performers Oni Lasana and Val Gray Ward.

This sounds like the kind of book that would be worth having kids for.
